50th Anniversary

The 1980s at Nuffield Hospitals

By the time the Nuffield Nursing Homes Trust (NNHT) celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1982 it had grown to comprise 31 hospitals, 1076 beds and had a turnover in excess of £33million. All this had been achieved to a great extent by the dedication and fundraising of local people, but NNHT’s growth was also supported by BUPA.

In 1983 the trading name of the organisation was changed to Nuffield Hospitals to reflect the Group’s status as a modern, well-equipped hospital group that provided major surgical and medical treatments as well as first-class nursing care.

The Eighties also saw the introduction of fixed cost surgery making private care more affordable and easier for patients to budget for treatment.

New Hospital Additions during the 1980s included:

  • Derby
  • Lancaster
  • Stockton-on-Tees (Tees).

Healthcare Developments during the 1980s

Consultants based at Nuffield Hospitals were at the forefront of introducing laparoscopic surgery to the UK in the 1980s. Laparoscopic surgery, or keyhole or minimally invasive surgery as it is also known, is a method of carrying out an operation without having to make a large incision. The technique leaves little scarring and has reduced the length of stay in hospital for many operations.
