The 2000s at Nuffield Hospitals

Two new state-of-the-art facilities were added to the Group during the early part of the new millennium – in Leeds and Oxford – providing leading-edge theatre and diagnostic facilities.

The Group also diversified, acquiring Vanguard Healthcare to supply mobile operating facilities, as well as launching Nuffield Proactive Health (providing wellness services), Nuffield Cosmetic Surgery (bringing together cosmetic expertise from across the Group) and Nuffield Diagnostics (consolidating expertise in radiology, pathology and other diagnostic disciplines to provide enhanced diagnostic services for our patients and consultants).

The start of the decade also saw considerable change within the UK healthcare market as the government looked to the private sector to help reduce waiting lists leading to increased numbers of patients being referred from local NHS hospitals.

Vanguard Healthcare

Vanguard Healthcare is the UK’s leading supplier of mobile operating theatres and was acquired by Nuffield in 2004. The acquisition provided Nuffield Hospitals’ with the potential to increase collaboration with the NHS by providing flexible, cost-effective, on demand surgical facilities to help reduce waiting lists. Today, Vanguard operates the world’s largest fleet of mobile operating theatres and performs more than 3000 surgical procedures every month.

Nuffield Proactive Health

Healthcare Developments during the 2000s

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, once the stuff of science fiction, were becoming commonplace in Nuffield Hospitals by the beginning of the 21st century. MRI scanners use magnetic and radio waves - meaning that there is no exposure to X-rays or any other damaging forms of radiation - to create detailed images of tissues, organs and other structures inside the human body.
